Use the sample searches below as a guide to using the Search 990s database. If you're new to FDO, begin by experimenting with Basic 990 Searches. For more complex scenarios, try some of the Advanced 990 Searches.

Basic 990 Searches:

Scenario 1 — Searching for 990s by grantmaker name (index search)

One of the most basic types of searches is one in which a single indexed search field is used.

Question: How can I search for 990s filed by a particular grantmaker, such as the Ford Foundation?

Answer: Conduct a Grantmaker Name index search.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Grantmaker Name field, type The Ford Foundation.
  2. Click Search. The 990 Search Results Screen appears and displays a list of 990 filings matching your search criteria.

  3. Click on a grantmaker name to open Adobe Reader and view the filing.

Scenario 2 — Searching for 990s by fiscal year and grantmaker ZIP code (index search)

Though still considered basic, a search in which more than one indexed search field is used is the first step in constructing more advanced search strategies. In fact, you're actually conducting a Boolean search because the Boolean operator and is automatically inserted "behind the scenes" between each search field. Your search will retrieve results containing matches in all search fields used.

Question: How can I search for 990s filed in 2006 by grantmakers located in ZIP code 10010 (New York, New York)?

Answer: Combine a Fiscal Year index search with a Grantmaker ZIP Code index search.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Fiscal Year field, type 2006.
  2. In the Grantmaker ZIP Code field, type 10010.
  3. Click Search. The 990 Search Results Screen appears and displays a list of 990 filings matching your search criteria.

  4. Click on a grantmaker name to open Adobe Reader and view the filing.

Scenario 3 — Searching for 990s by grantmaker state and keyword (index search, keyword search)

In Scenario 2, we used more than one indexed search field in a single search. You can also use more than one type of search field in a single search. Again, though still considered basic, you're actually using an advanced search technique because the Boolean operator and is automatically inserted "behind the scenes" between each search field. Your search will retrieve results containing matches in all search fields used.

Question: How can I search for 990s filed by grantmakers located in New York that contain "education"?

Answer: Combine a Grantmaker State index search with a keyword search.

  1. In the Grantmaker State Code field, type NY.
  2. In the Keyword Search field, type education.

Scenario 4 — Searching for 990s by grantmaker state and multiple keywords (index search, keyword search, Boolean search)

Advanced searches often involve multiple search fields and the use of Boolean operators.

Question: How can I search for 990s filed by grantmakers located in New York that contain "environment" or "health"?

Answer: Combine a Grantmaker State index search with a keyword search using the Boolean operator OR.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Grantmaker State Code field, type NY.
  2. In the Keyword Search field, type environment OR health.
  3. Click Search. The 990 Search Results Screen appears and displays a list of 990 filings matching your search criteria.

  4. Click on a grantmaker name to open Adobe Reader and view the filing.

Scenario 5 — Searching for 990s by grantmaker city and multiple keywords (index search, keyword search, Boolean search)

Question: How can I search for 990s filed by grantmakers located in Chicago that contain "senior citizens" and "disabled"?

Answer: Combine a Grantmaker City index search with a keyword search using the Boolean operator AND.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Grantmaker City field, type Chicago.
  2. In the Keyword Search field, type senior citizens AND disabled.
  3. Click Search. The 990 Search Results Screen appears and displays a list of 990 filings matching your search criteria.

  4. Click on a grantmaker name to open Adobe Reader and view the filing.

Scenario 6 — Searching for 990s by fiscal year and excluding 990s by keyword (index search, keyword search, Boolean search)

Question: How can I search for 990s filed in 2006 that don't contain "applications not accepted"?

Answer: Combine a Fiscal Year index search with a keyword search using the Boolean operator NOT.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Fiscal Year field, type 2006.
  2. In the Keyword Search field, type NOT applications not accepted.
  3. Click Search. The 990 Search Results Screen appears and displays a list of 990 filings matching your search criteria.

  4. Click on a grantmaker name to open Adobe Reader and view the filing.

Scenario 7 — Searching for 990s by grantmaker city and multiple keywords (index search, keyword search, Boolean search)

Question: How can I search for 990s filed by grantmakers located in Chicago that contain "science" and "education" in close proximity to each other?

Answer: Combine a Grantmaker City index search with a keyword search using the Boolean operator NEAR.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Grantmaker City field, type Chicago.
  2. In the Keyword Search field, type science NEAR/3 education.

  3. Click Search. The 990 Search Results Screen appears and displays a list of 990 filings matching your search criteria.

  4. Click on a grantmaker name to open Adobe Reader and view the filing.

Scenario 8 — Searching for 990s by grantmaker ZIP code and variations of keywords (index search, keyword search, wildcard search)

In Scenarios 4 through 7, we used various Boolean operators. Advanced searches also often involve the use of wildcard characters.

Question: How can I conduct a search for 990s filed by grantmakers located in ZIP code 10010 (New York, New York) that contain variations of the word "women"?

Answer: Combine a Grantmaker ZIP Code index search with a keyword search using the question mark wildcard character.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Grantmaker ZIP Code field, type 10010.
  2. In the Keyword Search field, type wom?n.

  3. Click Search. The 990 Search Results Screen appears and displays a list of 990 filings matching your search criteria.
