Background

Established in 1986 in NY - Founded by the late Harold Steinberg, who was a prominent real estate developer. Steinberg was president of the Downing Management Corporation, an active developer in Manhattan, NY, and also built the first hotel in Manhattan in 1957 called the Skyline Motor Inn. It was the first new hotel built in Manhattan since 1931.

Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award

This award honors a mid-career playwright whose body of work has already been recognized. With a cash prize of $200,000, it is believed to be the largest award to honor American playwriting. The first award recipient was announced in fall 2008, and the prize is awarded on a biennial basis thereafter. The trust has established an advisory committee of prominent theater professionals to determine the criteria for the awards, nominate playwrights, and select the recipients.

Steinberg Emerging Playwrights Award

Beginning in 2009, the Steinberg Emerging Playwrights Award, awarded biennially, will honor two early career playwrights whose professional work shows great promise. Each recipient will receive a cash prize of $50,000. The trust has established an advisory committee of prominent theater professionals to determine the criteria for the awards, nominate playwrights, and select the recipients. .
