Established in 2002 in CA. In 2004, the foundation incorporated the Skoll Community Fund, a supporting organization associated with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation of San Jose, CA, into its operations - Founded by Jeff Skoll, the first employee and president of the online auction firm, eBay. Skoll also founded Participant Media, an independent film production company with credits including the Oscar-nominated "Syriana," "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "North Country." Jeff Skoll has committed to The Giving Pledge, and has pledged to give away at least half of his wealth to philanthropy.

Program-Related Investment

The foundation has made PRIs in the form of loans to provide capital to financial institutions serving the poor in developing nations around the world. Historically, the foundation has made PRIs to enable proven social entrepreneurs to grow capital and expand capacity.

Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship (SASE)

The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship are presented each year to a select group of social entrepreneurs whose proven innovations are disrupting an unjust and unsustainable status quo and have demonstrated impact on solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. The award recognizes organizations that have the potential to scale their success and also to drive large-scale, systems change. Starting with its 2016 Skoll Awardee sourcing process, the foundation will be launching an online nomination system in the fall of 2014 .
