Program Area(s)

The grantmaker has identified the following area(s) of interest:

Arts and Culture Program

The foundation focuses its grant-making program on "emerging" artists: those who are expanding--or show the potential to expand--the vocabulary of the art form or discipline in which they work, but do not receive significant financial rewards for doing so. The foundation does not support artists whose work, however accomplished, is wholly traditional or mainstream. Rather, it is interested in artists who seek new ground--conceptually, thematically, stylistically, formally--or find new ways of surveying old ground, of reinventing traditions or synthesizing disparate elements. It looks for work that is unusual and provocative though it need not be "experimental." Grants are made for tuition expenses for formal study at an educational institution; for career or project development; or for unsupervised research. Grants are not made to foreign individuals. Grants are not made to scholars or those pursuing purely academic research. Grants are not made to musicians who are not also composers; or to musicians operating in the fields of "pop" music or traditional classical music.

Grants to Individuals Program

Grants to artists who have distinguished themselves or shown promise in the fields of literature, contemporary music with an improvisational element, and less frequently, visual or multi-media forms. Grants are made for tuition expenses at an educational institution or for a career or project development.
