Established in 1997 in WI - Founded by Pleasant Rowland, an educator, writer and entrepreneur. She was the publisher of the "Children's Magazine Guide" and created a comprehensive language arts program, called "Beginning to Read, Write, and Listen." In 1986, Rowland founded the Pleasant Company, which manufactured the "American Girl" dolls, books and accessories. In 1998, Rowland sold the Pleasant Company (now American Girl) to Mattel for $770 million.
