Incorporated in 1960 in DE - The foundation's original name, Edwin H. Land-Helen M. Land, Inc., was changed in 1972. Edwin H. Land is the founder and former chairman of the Polaroid Corp. and the inventor of the Polaroid-Land camera and film. The foundation had received annual gifts of stock in the Polaroid Corp. It awards grants either as cash or as transfers of Polaroid Corp. stock, valued according to the market value at the date of transfer. In 1980, the foundation acquired land in Cambridge, MA, on which it constructed a facility for advanced scientific research. In 1981, the facility was transferred to the Rowland Institute for Science, Inc., a private operating foundation organized in 1980 and funded in 1981. Initial foundation support for the institute totaled nearly $13 million in 1981
