Established in 1991 in MA - Founded in the name of Villum Kann Rasmussen, who founded the VELUX group of companies in Denmark in 1941, initially specializing in windows and skylights, and it now has manufacturing companies in 11 countries and sales companies in just under 40 countries.

Purpose and Activities

Giving primarily for the environment. The foundation favors projects that: 1) take stock of the scale of the environmental problems, 2) use a systems approach to achieve change, 3) link policy, advocacy, and practical solution, 4) have international significance and perspective, even if U.S. based, and 5) are based on original thinking and creative ideas. The foundation currently only evaluates projects within the categories of: Ecosystems Resilience, Protection and Restoration, (research and tools of relevance to large scale geographic areas including many countries and continents; natural greenhouse gas sequestration and storage with large scale impact potential, and agro-biodiversity); Framework of Ecological Stability (economic models of living within global limits and practical implementation of change to a stable global ecosystem, and sustainable production and land use); and Communication and Leadership (communicating value-based living with sustainable use of water, energy, and food resources, new innovative initiatives to enhance international cooperation and knowledge-sharing, and next generation leadership) .

This is the principal focus of the foundation's grantmaking. The goal is to strengthen environmental research and education, and to further the involvement of an informed public in environmental decisionmaking. The foundation is also active in the area of conservation and human health, where it recognizes the challenges inherent in increasing contact between and among wildlife, domesticated animals and human beings. It has also tried to address environmental issues through innovative research and new approaches to the development of public policy.

Greenwood, South Carolina and the State of South Carolina

The VELUX business expanded to the United States in the 1970s, with its main manufacturing plant and offices in Greenwood, South Carolina. Therefore, statewide, the foundation is interested in grantmaking especially in programs relating to higher education and the environment. In Greenwood the foundation has funded a range of educational, health and arts organizations. Values, ethics, religion, and ecology is a field of interest of major importance to the foundation.

Medical Research

The foundation has a strong interest in supporting continuing medical research in areas that are not likely to share in the large amounts of funding provided by the U.S. government to medical researchers in the U.S. This includes eye research, an area long supported by Villum Kann Rasmussen because of his keen interest, both personally and professionally, in daylight and its usefulness to people.
