Established in 1997 in NC - Founded by Raymond "Ray" J. Evernham, a professional race car driver. The idea for the foundation came after his own son, Ray J, was diagnosed with leukemia. During Ray's tenure with Jeffery Michael "Jeff" Gordon, he earned three championships, including two Daytona 500 victories and the inaugural Brickyard 400. Ray also won the NASCAR Winston Cup Illustrated “Person of the Year” in 1999. In 2006, the media voted Evernham the "Greatest Crew Chief of All Time."
