Type of Grantmaker

Independent foundation

Established in 2003 in OH from an initial endowment from The A.M. McGregor Home - The McGregor Foundation, established as a private grantmaking foundation in 2003, evolved from The A.M. McGregor Home, a senior care facility located in East Cleveland. The Home was founded in 1904 by Tootie McGregor Terry in honor of her late husband, Ambrose McGregor, who had been president of Standard Oil of Ohio. Mrs. Terry gave land owned by the McGregor family and funded construction of the Home in addition to creating the trust fund to ensure the Home's continued longevity and success. Over the ensuing hundred years, the trust fund grew until eventually it exceeded the amount needed to operate the Home. The McGregor Board of Directors chose to put some of the trust fund monies to work on behalf of Cleveland's vulnerable elderly - beyond those living on the McGregor campus - by creating The McGregor Foundation

Purpose and Activities

The foundation's Board of Directors favors grant requests that meet the needs of the economically disadvantaged and frail elderly in the following priority areas: 1) Home and community based care, particularly programs such as affordable housing with services; 2) Workforce development, especially related to providing ongoing educational and training opportunities for workers engaged in direct contact with, or providing services for, seniors in home and community based settings; and 3) Total quality of life programming for seniors in all settings. .
