Established in 1964 in CA - Carl McConnell was born near Chicago and moved to Siskiyou County, California in the mid 1920s. Leah Fairchild was born and raised in Yreka, California. They were married nearly 50 years. The McConnnells were entrepreneurs involved in a variety of business and real estate partnerships. Carl and Leah McConnell were among the largest shareholders of Farmers Insurance Group. The stock was purchased in 1928 by Carl's parents and sold in 1988. The McConnell Foundation was formed by Carl and Leah McConnell in order to share the benefit of their lifelong accomplishments. Mr. McConnell passed away in 1985, and by the time of Mrs. McConnell's death in 1995, their previously modest foundation had grown into the largest private foundation north of San Francisco.

Purpose and Activities

Primary interests include the children, youth and education, sustainable livable communities, international grantmaking, environment, environmental education, recreation; projects that demonstrate broad based community support, and the promotion of voluntarism and philanthropy.
