Background

Established in 1981 in NC - Founded by Leon Levine, the founder of the Family Dollar chain of discount stores. Levine created the first Family Dollar Store in Charlotte, North Carolina, with only a $6,000 investment, which represented all of his assets. When he retired as Chairman and C.E.O., the chain had grown to over 4600 stores with $1.1 billion in revenue. He started the foundation with a modest sum of money and felt it important to continually give back to the community that had helped him become so successful.
