The mission of the foundation is to make the world a better place through charitable giving. It provides grants for operating expenses and special projects to 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations located in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Preference goes to nonprofits with small operating budgets and/or few paid staff positions. Some of the many different causes which interest the foundation include emergency preparedness, conservation, sustainability and environmental issues, civil liberties, public radio, performing arts, libraries, animal shelters, alternative parenting, alternative education and home education, historic preservation and youth groups.
