Background

Established in 1989 in WI - Founded by Herbert Kohl, the former senator from Wisconsin who assumed office in 1989 and stepped down from office in 2013. Mr. Kohl is also the owner of the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks

Purpose and Activities

Scholarship awards to graduating seniors of public and private Wisconsin high schools; also awards fellowships for teachers of public and private WI schools. Giving also for elementary and secondary education.

Grants to Individuals Program

Scholarships to WI students to pursue a postsecondary education in a public or nonpublic university, college or vocational/technical college. Fellowships to Pre K-12 WI teachers for their teaching excellence and innovation.

Kohl Excellence Scholarship Program

Scholarships of $1,000 each to 100 high school graduates who intend to enroll in a postsecondary institution, university, college, or vocational/technical college. Students who are WI residents, in good standing, and demonstrate probable success in postsecondary education are eligible for consideration. Students will be evaluated on leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement. They will also be evaluated on their future educational goals, personal life goals, community/society service goals, and career goals. This is a competitive scholarship. Candidates are not evaluated on financial need. In September, an application form will be posted on the foundation's web site for the applicant print out. Applications for this program are not accepted online. In mid-September applicants can also obtain a form from the principal's office at their school. See foundation web site for guidelines.

Kohl Teacher Fellowship Program

Classroom teachers in Pre-K through grade 12 who are residents of WI and plan on continuing to teach for at least one additional year are eligible for nomination. The foundation awards $1,000 fellowship grants to teachers and each Kohl fellowship recipient's school receives a matching $1,000 grant. To be eligible for a fellowship, teachers must be nominated by parents, teachers, students, community members, or school district administrators. Recipients are chosen on the basis of the degree to which: 1) students have benefited from their leadership, 2) professional colleagues, parents, the community, or the profession itself have benefited from their leadership, 3) they have demonstrated and inspired a love of learning, 4) they have provided services above and beyond what was expected, and 5) they have positively contributed to the improvement of education in general.
