Background

Trust established in 1968 in DC - An investment banker, born and educated in NC, Mr. Johnston was a senior partner in the firm of Johnston, Lemon & Co. with offices in Washington, DC. He was president and chairman of the board of the Washington Mutual Investors Fund, Inc., director and chairman of the executive committee of Julius Garfinckel & Co., Inc., and a director and member of the executive committee of the International Bank of Washington and the Financial General Corp., and had served on the board of directors of several other corporations. Since it began grantmaking operations in 1969, a major portion of the trust's funds has been committed to the James M. Johnston Scholars Program for undergraduates and nursing students at the University of North Carolina, the founder's alma mater
