J.R. Hyde Senior Family Foundation and J.R. Hyde III Family Foundation established in TN in 1961 and 1993, respectively - The Hyde Family Foundations are a pair of philanthropic funds created by members of the Hyde family over a 46-year period, beginning with an initial $1 million investment by Joseph Hyde, Sr. in 1961. Today the assets of the Hyde Family Foundations total over $115 million and approximately $17 million is granted annually to groups dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Memphis, TN area

Purpose and Activities

The Hyde Family Foundations are committed to building a better Memphis. Through active, engaged philanthropy, their mission is to empower the people and programs that are making measurable differences in the community, and to provide leadership on public policy issues that will help Memphis become a world-class, 21st century city. The foundation is passionate about supporting high-impact initiatives in Memphis, focusing on three distinct areas of influence: 1) Transforming Education; 2) Positioning Authentic Assets; and 3) Livable Communities .

The foundation works with innovative community partners to strengthen and showcase Memphis' authentic assets in the areas of: 1) Arts and Culture; and 2) Civic Growth and Leadership.

Transforming Education

The foundations’ philosophy on education states: All children deserve a high-quality education that prepares them for success. With the needs of students always at the forefront, the foundations’ education efforts are focused on closing the achievement gap by: 1) Developing and rewarding great teachers and school leaders; 2) Supporting transformative schools; and 3) Sponsoring effective public policy.
