Established in 1990 - Founded by Spanish tenor Jose Carreras. Mr. Carreras is known as one of the most popular and respected tenors of the late 20th century. He has performed leading roles with the New York City Opera, the New York Metropolitan Opera, and La Scala. In addition, he was one of the "Three Tenors" (with Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti), whose album "Carreras - Domingo - Pavarotti: the Three Tenors in Concert" is one of the best-selling classical albums of all time

The foundation aims to cure leukemia and related diseases, such as lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, by providing funding for medical research.

Awards $50,000 for one fellowship, renewable yearly for two additional years upon satisfactory performance. Candidates must hold an M.D. or Ph.D. degree and have completed at least three years postdoctoral training but must be less than ten years post their first doctoral degree when the award begins. There are no restrictions based on nationality, but only one application will be considered from each sponsoring institution.
