Background

Established in 2004 in TX - Founded by the late George Phydias Mitchell, who was a businessman and real estate developer from Texas. He started an independent oil and gas company, Mitchell Energy & Development, that he sold to Devon Energy in 2001 for $3.5 billion. Mitchell, a nature enthusiast, built Woodlands residential community in 1974 and sold it in 1997. He formerly owned Bald Head Island in North Carolina as well as hotels in Galveston. He and his wife Cynthia have played a major role in the revitalization of his hometown of Galveston. George Mitchell has committed to The Giving Pledge, and has pledged to give away at least half of his wealth to philanthropy.

Giving primarily for advanced research dedicated to improving human and ecosystem well-being through the application of sustainability science and principles of sustainable development.
