Incorporated in 1945 in NY - Founded by the late Samuel I. Newhouse, Sr., who was the founder and publisher of the Advance Publications empire which currently controls Condé Nast Publications. From 1922 until his death in 1979, Newhouse built one of the country's largest communications empires that took in 31 newspapers in 22 cities: seven American magazines, magazines in Britain, France, Italy, and West Germany; five radio stations, cable television systems, and Eastern Microwave, Inc., a common carrier of television signals to cable systems in NY, PA, and New England. In 1960, the foundation made a gift of $2 million to establish a center for education and research in mass communications at Syracuse University. In subsequent years, a major portion of the foundation's funding has continued to support the center.
