Purpose and Activities

The mission of the foundation is to enable communities and nonprofit institutions to improve the quality and circumstances of life for present and future generations. In meeting these challenges, the foundation employs flexible approaches and innovative strategies that are responsive to changing needs and new opportunities. The goal is to stimulate long-lasting and sustainable progress, which contributes to community vitality and economic growth.


Established in 1979 in PA - Mr. McCune was board chairman of Union National Bank of Pittsburgh. The foundation is a memorial to his parents, John Robison McCune and Janet Lockhart McCune, and was set up to distribute the bulk of Mr. McCune's estate to qualified charities over the 50-year period following Mr. McCune's death in 1979. According to the donor's will, beginning in 1984, the foundation was to distribute its net income annually and terminate in 2029 In fiscal 1984, the foundation received over $90 million from the estate of Charles L. McCune and, in fiscal 1985, had its first full year of grantmaking
