Purpose and Activities

The Helmsley Charitable Trust aspires to improve lives by supporting effective organizations in the U.S. and around the world in health and select place-based initiatives. Program areas include: Conservation, IBD and Crohn’s Disease, Israel, New York City, Rural Healthcare, Type 1 Diabetes, and Vulnerable Children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Established in 1999 in NY, US; The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust began its active grantmaking in 2008 after the passing a year earlier of Leona Helmsley, who left nearly all of the Helmsleys' estate to the trust. Leona’s husband, Harry Helmsley, began his real estate and hotel empire in the 1930s and made an indelible mark on the New York City skyline with property holdings such as the Empire State Building. Harry and Leona also left a tremendous philanthropic legacy during their lifetimes, donating many millions of dollars to a range of causes, focusing primarily on health-related institutions and efforts. Today, the Helmsley Charitable Trust supports effective organizations in health and place-based initiatives, and has committed more than $1.5 billion to a wide range of charitable purposes.
