Incorporated in 1963 in NJ - During its early years of operation, the foundation contributed to a broad range of local charities including hospitals, secondary schools, and cultural institutions, as well as oceanographic and conservation projects. The Atlantic Foundation was created to fulfill the philanthropic vision of the Johnson family. Initially led by founder J. Seward Johnson, Sr., and since 1983 by his son J. Seward Johnson, Jr., the Foundation's support has centered on a smaller number of recipients selected by the Johnsons, with major funding allocated for the Harbor Branch Foundation, Inc., originally a private operating foundation in marine sciences research and ocean engineering projects and now the research division of Florida Atlantic University. The Atlantic Foundation now provides major support for arts and cultural organizations with an emphasis on the development of Grounds For Sculpture a sculpture park in Hamilton NJ and the worldwide public sculpture installations of The Sculpture Foundation.
