Purpose and Activities

The foundation sponsors a "Music to Life" contest and encourages musicians to give back through their music. The foundation is currently doing grassroots outreach to musicians who write music of social or political significance, encouraging them through grants to their favorite non-profits and connecting their song with non-profits for use in benefit galas, educational videos, etc., and will occasionally issue grants to pre-selected organizations, primarily in the areas of children and family services.

Established in 1971 in NY - Founded by Noel Paul Stookey, a composer and part of the folk singing trio Peter, Paul and Mary, a group known for such songs as "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer," "Day is Done," "Light One Candle" and "The Great Mandala." In addition to his recordings with the trio, Stookey released a number of solo works, and several albums with an ensemble called Bodyworks. He was also the founder of the Neworld Multimedia record label. Stookey established the foundation to receive and distribute the royalties of the “Wedding Song” to charity, choosing the name Public Domain Foundation (PDF), to signify that all revenues from the “Wedding Song” were, in effect, public funds to be channeled to public good.
