Purpose and Activities

The foundation promotes and champions the betterment of the greater Pittsburgh, PA, community and the quality of life for all its citizens by helping a wide variety of donors fulfill their philanthropic interests through providing leadership in identifying and addressing significant community needs. The foundation provides a vehicle to make giving easy, personally satisfying and effective. The foundation is organized for the permanent administration of funds placed in trust for public charitable and educational purposes. Funds are used for programs of regularly established agencies for organizational capacity building, systemic change, improved service delivery, planning and program development, capital and equipment, operating support and community building. Grants are made primarily in the areas of Self Sufficient Individuals and Families, Healthy Communities and Vibrant Democracy.

Established in 1945 in PA by bank resolution and declaration of trust - Today, the foundation holds its gifts with three trustee banks and seven investment managers. Each trustee bank and investment manager is custodian and investment manager for the funds it holds for the foundation, while the board of directors, comprised of 14 leading citizens, directs actual grantmaking. The grantmaker is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement
