Purpose and Activities

The foundation pursues and invests in solutions that build an equitable Greater Washington, DC community in which economically vulnerable people thrive.


Incorporated in 1944 in NY - Mr. Meyer, a Wall Street financier, organized the Allied Chemical and Dye Corp. in 1921, now Allied Corp. Throughout his life he held several governmental positions, including director of the War and Finance Corp., governor of the Federal Reserve Board, chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corp., and first president of the World Bank. In 1933, he purchased the Washington Post and assumed the active role of publisher. His wife, Agnes Ernst Meyer, was a journalist and social activist. The first woman reporter hired by the New York Sun, Mrs. Meyer maintained her interest in journalism throughout her life and was the author of four books and numerous articles. She was the founder of the Urban Service Corps and the National Committee for Support of the Public Schools The foundation is a signatory to Philanthropy's Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement.
