Purpose and Activities

The Foundation supports: 1) Literacy enrichment programs for New York City public school children that focus on arts education and professional development; 2) Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins Medical School; 3) Grants in palliative care research, currently focused on the National Palliative Care Research Center at Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, New York; and 4) Community service grants focused on improving education, health and well-being services for immigrant and minority communities in New York City..


Established in 1979 - The foundation was established by Emily Davie Kornfeld in 1979, and was the principal beneficiary of Mrs. Kornfeld's estate upon her death in 1989. Mrs. Kornfeld's personal philanthropy supported medical research in the control and treatment of pain, as well as efforts directed at enhancing individual choice in medical treatment and dying. In the last decade the foundation has evolved its interests to include bioethics, palliative care, medical research and education
