Purpose and Activities
The foundation provides 'critical-stage' funding to the best and brightest young investigators who are excelling at National Cancer Institute-designated cancer facilities and other research institutes in the U.S.
Background
Established in 1993 in NC - Founded by the late James Thomas Anthony "Jimmy V" Valvano. Valvano was the head basketball coach for Johns Hopkins (1969-1970), Bucknell University (1972-1975), Iona College (1975-1980) and North Carolina State University (1980-1990). Under his leadership, North Carolina won the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament in 1983. He also worked as a broadcaster for ESPN and ABC until his death from bone cancer in 1993. Prior to his passing, Valvano became a motivational speaker, and developed his famous inspirational phrase "Don't give up, don't ever give up".
