Purpose and Activities

Grants primarily to promote mental health and social welfare through preventive measures, treatment, and rehabilitation. Support also for the field of psychiatry. Within its broad focus on mental health, the foundation is interested in encouraging and attracting innovative and practical programs in areas which: 1) increase the accessibility of the poor and needy to mental health services; and 2) offer preventative and early intervention strategies.


Incorporated in 1950 in NY - The foundation received all its assets from Arnold Louis van Ameringen during his lifetime and from his estate following his death in 1966 and from his widow, Hedwig van Ameringen during her lifetime and at her death in 1996. Mr. van Ameringen was chairman of the board of International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc. and a leader in work to promote mental health. The grantmaker is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement
