Purpose and Activities

To support and facilitate activities that significantly improve the health and well being of individuals and communities within its service area. The majority of funding will be to hospitals in Los Angeles and northern Orange Counties, CA.

Established in 1998 in CA - In 1988, UniHealth became a California nonprofit public benefit corporation as a result of the merger of two other nonprofit healthcare providers, Health West Foundation and LHS, the parent company of the Lutheran Hospital Society of Southern California. Until 1998, UniHealth directly and indirectly served as the parent corporation of a substantial number of nonprofit tax-exempt medical centers and taxable for-profit subsidiaries and affiliates. UniHealth was formed in the midst of an ongoing countrywide revolution in the health care delivery and reimbursement systems. Dramatic increases in costs of health care along with decreasing governmental and private insurance payment levels made it increasingly difficult for nonprofit hospitals to operate and remain viable. In mid 1996, the Board of UniHealth undertook an analysis of its strategic options and determined that UniHealth could better serve its constituency and carry out its charitable mission by changing the means by which it fulfilled its charitable mission and becoming a grantmaking foundation. On December 3, 1998, UniHealth completed the merger of its medical centers with Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), a California nonprofit public benefit corporation. The Board of Directors of UniHealth adopted Restated Articles of Incorporation and the corporation became UniHealth Foundation, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes.
