Purpose and Activities

The organization is dedicated to promoting the literary arts by presenting quality literary programming; increasing the awareness of literature as a significant art form; promoting excellence in writing; providing support for literary artists; and commemorating James Thurber's literary and artistic achievements.


Established in 1984 in OH - Founded in the name of the late James Thurber, who was a cartoonist and short-story contributor to The New Yorker from 1930 to 1961. He is also the author of the books "My Life and Hard Times" (1933) and "My World and Welcome to It" (1942). The Thurber Prize for American Humor, awarded to outstanding contributions in the field of humor writing, is named after him.
