Purpose and Activities

The foundation is a permanent philanthropic resource dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in nine counties in Northeast Alabama including Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, DeKalb, Etowah, Randolph, St. Clair, and Talladega. The foundation's mission is to wisely assess needs and channel donor resources to maximize community well-being, by using donor gifts to grow funds that benefit the community.

Established in 1997 in AL; reorganized as a community foundation in 1999 - The foundation has its genesis in the generosity of Susie Parker Stringfellow, who in 1920 willed her home on Leighton Avenue to serve as a nonprofit hospital. Upon Mr. Stringfellow's death in 1939, Stringfellow Memorial Hospital began operating and continued to serve the community for the next 60 years. From 1995 to 1997, the hospital entered into a management agreement with Health Management Associates. On January 27, 1997, the hospital entered into a 30 year management agreement with HMA and placed the capitalized assets of 13 million into the Stringfellow Health Fund of the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama. In 2008, HMA entered into a new forty year management agreement with the Community Foundation. The foundation is comprised of 143 funds with assets just under $35 million. Since inception the Foundation has awarded more than $15 million in grants and scholarships. Each has its own charitable designation awarding either grants or scholarships back to the community. Many individuals or families begin a fund during their lifetime and designate all or a portion of their estate to maintain the fund in perpetuity
