Purpose and Activities

The purpose of the foundation is to influence policy and practice by searching for evidence and demonstrating solutions for the following issues: poverty and disadvantage, the quality of people's homes and communities, and the nature of services and support that foster well being and citizenship in the U.K.

Established in 1904 - Founded by the late Joseph Rowntree in 1904, the trust was originally called the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust to administer Joseph Rowntree's model village, New Earswick. In 1959, the trust widened its objectives to cover research and development, and the Village Trust was transformed into the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust by a private Act of Parliament. The trust was then renamed the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in 1990. Rowntree, a Quaker businessman, was known as a champion of social reform and as a chocolatier in the family business Rowntree's, one of the most recognized confectionery businesses in Britain at its time, and subsequently acquired by Nestlé as a brand.
