Purpose and Activities

The purpose of the foundation is to work against the causes of poverty and injustice, and to promote peace and democracy in the areas of religion, society, and politics.


Established in 1904 - Founded by the late Joseph Rowntree, a Quaker businessman, who was known as a champion of social reform and as a chocolatier in the family business Rowntree's, one of the most recognized confectionery businesses in Britain at its time, and subsequently acquired by Nestle as a brand. The trust provides grants for projects in areas that are of concern to the trust.
