Purpose and Activities

In the more than seven decades since making its first grant, the Rosenberg Foundation has distinguished itself as an ally of the state's most vulnerable residents. From its early work supporting efforts on behalf of Japanese American families returning from internment camps to more recent work to reduce the incarceration rates for women in California, the foundation's aim has remained consistent: to achieve significant and lasting improvements in the life of Californians.

Incorporated in 1935 in CA - The Rosenberg Foundation was established in 1935 by a group of relatives and business associates who were designated as trustees in the will of Max L. Rosenberg, a San Francisco businessman and philanthropist who died in 1931. Mr. Rosenberg was the president and major shareholder of Rosenberg Brothers & Co., the firm he and his brothers Abraham and Adolph formed in 1893 to pack and ship dried fruit from California. The company prospered and became the largest of its kind in the world, with packinghouses and mills throughout the agricultural areas of California and Oregon, and sales offices in 65 foreign countries. The grantmaker is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement
