Purpose and Activities

To improve the quality of life and quality of health for the financially needy of North Carolina. The trust accomplishes its work through its two divisions. The Health Care Division and The Poor and Needy Division.


Established in 1947 in NC - The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust is named for the late Kate Gertrude Bitting Reynolds. Mrs. Reynolds was born Oct.14, 1867 and died Sept. 23, 1946. She was married to William Neal Reynolds, Chair., of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The trust was created in 1947 under Mrs. Reynolds's will. The grantmaker is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement
