Purpose and Activities

The foundation is dedicated to improving quality of life for our nation's older population. It awards grants each year in support of programs, research, advocacy, and training to improve the quality of life for older Americans.


Incorporated in 1950 in MI - Mr. MacArthur was an insurance and real estate magnate and one of the nation's wealthiest individuals. Upon his death in 1978, Mr. MacArthur left the bulk of his estate to charities through two nonprofit foundations. To The Retirement Research Foundation he left 234,134 shares of Citizens Bank and Trust Co. common stock and to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation he left stock in Bankers Life and Casualty The foundation is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement.
