Purpose and Activities

The mission of the foundation is to support indigenous and traditional people of the world's rainforests in their efforts to protect their environment and fulfill their rights by assisting them in: securing and controlling the natural resources necessary for their long-term well-being and managing these resources in ways which do not harm their environment, violate their culture, or compromise their future; and developing the means to protect their individual and collective rights and to obtain, shape, and control basic services from the state.


Established in 1992 in NY as Rainforest Foundation International; name changed in 1999 to Rainforest Foundation Fund - Founded by Gordon "Sting" Sumner, a recording artist, and his wife Trudie Styler, an actor and producer. From 1977 to 1984, Sting was the lead singer of the band The Police. As a solo artist, his albums include "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" (1985), "Nothing Like the Sun" (1987), "Ten Summoner's Tales" (1993), and "Brand New Day" (1999). Styler has produced such films as "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" (1998), "Snatch" (2000), and "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" (2006)
