Established in 1967 in NY - The Perkin Fund is a charitable family foundation that provides grants to established institutions in the fields of astronomy, medicine and scientific research. In recent years, The Perkin Fund has also supported leading institutions in the arts, education and social services. The Fund reflects the broad interests of the founders, Richard S. and Gladys T. Perkin, and their family. Prior to his death in 1969, Mr. Perkin had been a founder and Chairman of the Board of The Perkin-Elmer Corporation, a leading manufacturer of scientific instruments and optical systems. Following Mr. Perkin's death, and until her death in 2001, Mrs. Perkin served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Perkin Fund, lending her support to the advancement of scientific endeavors. Today, The Perkin Fund continues to be led by members of the Perkin family who, along with non-family Trustees, serve The Perkin Fund without compensation. The Perkin Fund continues to be primarily interested in scientific research, education, medicine and related disciplines. However, over the past twenty years, The Perkin Fund has grown in size and broadened its mandate. This has enabled the Trustees to consider a limited number of requests in the areas of human services and the arts. The Perkin Fund bases its grants on written requests from qualified institutions for support of worthwhile projects and programs. The Trustees evaluate these proposals to determine which are deemed especially important and fall within The Perkin Fund's guidelines.
