Purpose and Activities

The foundation seeks to encourage athletes and scholars whose endeavors will contribute to the growth and development of athletics in Hawaii; support athletic events and participation by teams and individuals ranging from local to international competition; help individuals in furthering their education; and assist in preserving, perpetuating, and developing sports and arts which have a special cultural or historical significance to Hawaii.


Established in 1981 in HI - Founded in memory of the late Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, who was an Olympic Swimmer. Kahanamoku won gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle at the 1912 Stockholm and 1920 Antwerp Summer Olympics. He also won gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the 1920 Olympics. He is also widely recognized as a pioneer in the popularization of surfing in Hawaii and California
