Purpose and Activities

The foundation fosters path-breaking scientific discovery, environmental conservation, improvements in patient care, and preservation of the special character of the San Francisco, CA, Bay Area. There are significant problems facing the world today and more will arise in the future. Many problems are of a scope and complexity too large for the foundation to take head on. The foundation's funding strategies are guided by a rigorous assessment, which evaluates whether its capacity and resources can be significant factors in bringing about measurable, durable solutions.

Established in 2000 in CA - Driven by the vision of its founders, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation enables lasting, meaningful change through sustained, scientifically sound philanthropy. Recognizing the sector's role as society's venture capital, the foundation makes bold investments and takes considered risks to attain significant results that can improve the future. The foundation seeks to achieve through philanthropy what Gordon Moore accomplished for the world of computing: to create an ever more powerful engine of progress in society. Gordon and Betty Moore established the foundation to create positive outcomes for future generations. In 1965, Gordon Moore made a rule-of-thumb prediction that later became known as Moore's Law. As a founder of Intel, he helped shape what we now recognize as the Silicon Valley and technology sector. Betty Moore's personal commitment to improving the experience of patients and the couple's desire to expand knowledge, conserve the natural world, and preserve all that makes the Bay Area special, guides the foundation's funding. Gordon and Betty Moore have committed to The Giving Pledge, and have pledged to give away at least half of their wealth to philanthropy.
