Purpose and Activities

The mission of the foundation is to distribute funds to preserve and enhance the legacy of Johnny Mercer, to assist children with illness or disability, to provide educational programs for music appreciation, to assist in the development of songwriters, and to enhance the general appreciation of American popular music.


Established in 1982 in CA - Founded in the name of the late Johnny Mercer, who was a songwriter and singer, but mostly known for being a lyricist. His lyrics were most popular in songs during the 1930's through the 1950's, and some of them include "Hooray for Hollywood," "Jeepers, Creepers!," "That Old Black Magic," "Glow Worm," "Satin Doll," "Moon River," "Days of Wine and Roses," and "Jubilation T. Cornpone," along with many others. His lyrics have also been heard in the songs of many stage musicals including "St. Louis Woman," "Li'l Abner" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."
