Purpose and Activities

The trust concentrates its efforts on supporting solutions to prevent and end homelessness. The trust supports service and housing programs in Connecticut that can serve as models throughout the country. The trust also funds educational, research and advocacy initiatives in the state and on the national level.

Established in 1987 in NY - The Melville Trust was organized in 1990 with the desire to understand the growing problem of homelessness and help eradicate it. The foundation decided to focus its study on Connecticut and to create programs that would alleviate and reduce the impact of homelessness on children, adults and communities. The grantmaker is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement
