Purpose and Activities

To strengthen our democracy and promote a more just and equitable American culture, the foundation funds activities that build civil society's energy, leadership, and resources, and utilizes these in the political and policy spheres of civil society. Through grants, capacity building assistance, and other support to allied organizations, the foundation partners with diverse communities in working for long term social, political, and economic progress.


Established in 1992 in CA - The grantmaker is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement
