Purpose and Activities

The foundation is dedicated to the goals of advancing science for the benefit of humanity and promoting increased public understanding of and support for scientists and their work. The foundation has selected three areas in which to focus its activities: astrophysics, neuroscience, and nanoscience. An international program of research institutes, prizes, symposia, and endowed professorships is being established to further these goals.

Established in 2000 in CA - Fred Kavli was born in Norway and received his education in physics at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, financing his studies with proceeds form a business venture he and his brother ran as teenagers during World War II. He came to the United States in 1956 to launch a business and two years later founded the Kavlico Corporation, located in Moorpark, California. Under his leadership, the company became one of the world's largest suppliers of sensors for aeronautic, automotive, and industrial applications. The company received many distinguished awards, and Mr. Kavli patented numerous technological breakthroughs. He remained C.E.O. and sole shareholder of the company until he divested his interest in 2000. He subsequently established The Kavli Foundation
