Purpose and Activities

The foundation is a nonprofit, private operating foundation that develops and runs its own research and communications programs and does not accept unsolicited funding requests.

Trust established in 1948 in CA; changed status to operating foundation in 1999 - Founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser, an industrialist who became known as the father of modern American shipbuilding and who was chairman of Kaiser Industries Corp. He established the Kaiser Shipyard that built Liberty ships during World War II, after which he formed Kaiser Aluminum and Kaiser Steel. He also founded Kaiser Permanente, an integrated managed care organization. The foundation received bequests from the estates of both Mr. and Mrs. Kaiser, as well as from the estate of their younger son, Henry J. Kaiser, Jr., after his death in 1961. The founder's concern for the unmet health needs of large segments of the population, shared by members of the Kaiser family, has shaped the goals and activities of the foundation. At present, it is considered one of the nation's major foundations in the fields of medicine and health.
