Purpose and Activities

Giving primarily to provide access to the arts for disadvantaged children in the U.S. and to work for the freedom of missing and exploited children worldwide. The foundation is committed to providing opportunities for children in the U.S.A. to express their innate creativity through the arts, specifically music, design and the visual arts. Priority is given to programs that create ongoing structures for children to have access to arts education and to initiatives that incorporate the arts as an essential element in basic educational curricula. The foundation is also committed to addressing the cause of missing and exploited children worldwide, and to working for their freedom and well being. Specific focus is on ending child pornography and sexual exploitation through supporting innovative programs and institutions that make a measurable difference in the lives of the children caught in the cycle of poverty and violence.


Established in 1991 in VA - Founded by Sheila and Robert L. Johnson. Sheila Johnson is Team President, Managing Partner, and Governor of the Women's National Basketball Association's Washington Mystics. She is the first African-American woman to be an owner or partner in three professional sports franchises: the Mystics, the Washington Capitals (NHL) and the Washington Wizards (NBA). She and her former husband, Robert L. Johnson, are the founders of Black Entertainment Television, a cable network that principally focuses on young African-American audiences. Robert L. Johnson founded The RLJ Companies, a holding company that invests in various business sectors.
