Purpose and Activities

The foundation promotes the well-being of mankind by making grants for study and research in the social sciences (economics, history, government, and sociology) with emphasis on education, the environment, immigration and public policy. It also provides doctoral dissertation fellowships, and fellowships for faculty members in the social sciences at colleges and universities in the greater Los Angeles region. Grants made only through local colleges and universities or other nonprofit institutions.


Trust established in 1926 in CA - Dr. Haynes and his wife, Dora, were active and progressive citizens of Los Angeles from 1887-1937. The foundation attempts to reflect directly the interests of Dr. and Mrs. Haynes by focusing its resources on the fields which particularly concerned them. Accordingly, the trustees of the foundation support study and research in economics, government, history, and sociology, with specific application to the Los Angeles area. By dissemination of the results of the research, and by other means, the foundation seeks to improve public awareness of current issues
