Purpose and Activities

The foundation funds projects that: a) work toward world peace, b) work to end economic and social discrimination and exploitation, racial/ethnic conflicts, and civil injustices; c) provide educational opportunities to low-income and minority students through scholarship organizations; d) advance and promote new works of American political art, especially efforts involving cultural and societal issues; e) preserve and enhance the legacy of E.Y. Harburg through new projects or revivals of his standard works in all media.


Established in 1981 in NY - Founded in the name of the late Edgar Yipsel "Yip" Harburg, a lyricist of many popular standards. Harburg wrote the lyrics to "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime," "It's Only a Paper Moon," as well as all the songs in the film "The Wizard of Oz," including "Over the Rainbow." Harburg shared an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song for "The Wizard of Oz." He is a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee.
