The fund's primary focus is early childhood development. Support is for activities that provide San Francisco's young (ages 2-5), low-income children and their families with access to high-quality early childhood programs that are part of a comprehensive, coordinated system. The fund recognizes the importance of connecting the work of its direct service grants to the ongoing discussions of public policy and will seek specific opportunities to share and collaborate with organizations to improve early childhood settings. The fund will also continue trustee-initiated grantmaking to arts, education, public affairs, and health and human services organizations.
Incorporated in 1982 in CA - The Miriam and Peter Haas Fund, a private foundation located in San Francisco, CA, was incorporated in 1982 and for the first ten years was administered by the trustees. In 1992, the fund received a large bequest. With new resources, the trustees hired staff, established a more formalized structure, and chose early childhood as their primary focus. Based upon research conducted in 1993 and 1994, fund staff and trustees developed a grantmaking framework to be implemented in stages over several years
