Purpose and Activities

Fellowships offered to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions and irrespective of race, color, or creed. Fellowships are awarded by the trustees upon nomination by a Committee of Selection. Awards are made to citizens and permanent residents of the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The foundation decided to suspend its Latin American and Caribbean competition for the year 2016 while it examines the workings and efficacy of the program. The U.S. and Canadian competition is unaffected by this suspension.

Incorporated in 1925 in NY - Founded by the late United States Senator Simon Guggenheim and his wife as a memorial to a son who died Apr. 26, 1922. Simon Guggenheim was the president of the American Smelting and Refining Co. and served as a United States Senator from Colorado from 1907-1913. Senator and Mrs. Guggenheim made an initial gift of $3 million to the foundation, which was later supplemented by an additional gift of $1 million to include Latin American Scholarships. The foundation is administered by a board of trustees and corporate officers. They are assisted in the selection of fellows by an educational advisory board, its Committees of Selection, and panels of advisors composed of prominent members of the academic and artistic communities.
