Purpose and Activities

The foundation supports successful programs aimed at enhancing quality education with the purpose of providing underserved Colombian children better opportunities to develop and succeed, contributing to a more equal society.

Established in 2001 in FL - The Genesis Foundation was created in 2001 by a group of business leaders based in the U.S. and Colombia who saw a need for change and social innovation in the country, and found themselves in the position to help financially. They began their involvement with a single donation of $10,000. This started a chain of successful social investments targeted towards supporting local programs which had a track record of successful intervention in health and education: two areas deemed to have the most immediate, positive impact in terms of achieving solid, sustainable benefits among populations in need. Since then, the foundation has donated over $11 million to more than 90 organizations. The Genesis founders also created the Genesis Endowment, managed pro-bono as a separate entity to ensure that the seed funding source for the foundation remains consistent and in line with programmatic needs and expectations over the course of each year. In 2005, the foundation expanded by opening an office in Bogota, to become more directly involved with project activities on the ground and provide oversight and operational assistance to its grantees. In 2009, the foundation was legally incorporated in Colombia under Fundacion Genesis para la Ninez, to facilitate local fundraising activities, and encourage greater alliances with partners in the public and private sectors. In 2010, Genesis discontinued its health care line and chose to dedicate its resources to formal education, with a specific focus on projects prioritizing the needs of children up to the age of 12. Since 2011, the Genesis Foundation is in the process of changing its status from private foundation to become a public charity, which will open doors towards new sources of financing. The foundation today is recognized as one of the leading organizations in Colombia promoting innovative, efficient and results-oriented education and reforming preschool and primary school education.
